It doesn't announce itself. Between 1200 and 1600 it was the principal trading port for Dublin, the largest ships of the time anchored in the deep waters of Dalkey Sound, their cargo rowed ashore by longboat. Today it's a small, unhurried harbour with stone walls and open water.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJust offshore sits Dalkey Island with its Martello tower, built in 1804. As you pass through the narrow passage to the harbour, for a moment you can see everything as it used to be, or as it always was.
