First Light, Sally Gap

ABOUT THIS PRINT
Autumn and winter have always been my favourite months for photographing the landscape. The sun rises late compared to summer, which makes being out for first light easier - no four a.m. starts, just a dark drive up into the mountains and a wait.
This was one of those mornings, at Sally Gap. A heavy sky, rain threatening from the west. The morning sun broke through for a moment, just long enough. The light caught the road and the grass verges and left the sky dark behind them. Without that light it's a different photograph. A minute either side and there's nothing there.
Shot handheld on a Minolta SRT 101 with Ilford HP5 Plus, developed in my darkroom.

A NOTE ON PRINT TONE
These are not strictly black and white prints. Each image is toned in post to a specific warmth, a slight shift away from neutral grey. It's subtle. They'll read as monochrome at a glance, but there's warmth in there. That's intentional.
Shot on 35mm film, the grain of the original negative is part of the image.

Mockup images are for illustrative purposes. We recommend measuring your wall before ordering.
FRAMING
Framing is not included. These are poster-format prints, designed to sit flush in a frame with no mount. Standard frames are widely available from IKEA, Desenio, and most independent framers. A simple black or natural wood frame works well.
For the best finish, I recommend professional framing with anti-reflective glass. It makes a significant difference to how the print reads on the wall.
